70 ft Truck Scales for Sale – What You Need to Look For When Buying.

When it comes to buying a 70 foot long truck scale, there are about a half dozen key ingredients to think about. If you don’t look at these important factors it could lead to increased scale down time, increased costs and overall dissatisfaction with your scale purchase. Don’t let that happen, be sure to look at the following key features.

We sell several different brands of truck scales but the list below from Rice Lake sums up the key facts to consider when purchasing a truck scale for weighing your trucks with trailer.

70 ft truck scale

IS THE TRUCK SCALE BUILT TO WITHSTAND EXTREME USE?
Rice Lake SURVIVOR® series truck scales utilize up to 25 percent more steel than most competitive models and incorporate a longitudinal highway bridge design. The Survivor truck scale is designed to provide you with years of service. It’s important to purchase a scale that is built tough and not full of short cuts.

DOES THE TRUCK SCALE PROVIDE ULTRA LOAD CELL PROTECTION?
SURVIVOR truck scales are designed with the load cell pocket integrated into the steel structure of the scale. Rice Lake truck scales are some of the most reliable truck scales in the market today. The design of their Survivor truck scale is important and is a big part of why they enjoy one of the lowest load cell failure rates in the industry.

DOES THE SCALE OFFER BREATHING ROOM BELOW THE PLATFORM?
SURVIVOR steel deck truck scales feature an open-bottom design, providing unrestricted airflow to eliminate rust-causing moisture buildup. Important feature since the scale is going to be providing you weights for many years of service.

IS THE SCALE TOUGH, FROM START TO FINISH?
High-performance epoxy primer and specialized hard-coat alkyd enamel is applied to all visible steel surfaces for a car-like finish that protects the scale from the elements. Once again, this is important since your truck scale is going to be out in the elements for many years.

IS THE SCALE AVAILABLE IN CUSTOM SIZES?
SURVIVOR truck scales can be custom-built to fit almost any project specification and application requirement including installations on existing foundations or in unique locations with space limitations. One important thing to consider is the width of your truck scale. Many customers will choose a 10 foot wide scale bridge. This is ok but often for just a little more money, you can order a 11 foot wide scale and give your drivers a little extra room to maneuver across the scale.

IS YOUR SUPPLIER ABLE TO OFFER A COMPLETE SOLUTION FOR ANY APPLICATION?
Our supplier Rice Lake offers not only the scale, but the complete solution for your weighing application. The digital weight indicator is important since it will normally include the truck storage program. We can also provide you with a ticket printer and remote display so that your drivers can see their truck weight on the scale.

Save Thousands of Dollars By Just Having Your Truck Scale Calibrated Regularly

Over time, truck scale accuracy can change due to a variety of issues, mostly usage and wear and tear. When you’re looking at a truck scale, accuracy is very important to your business because the value of the product you are transporting affects your bottom line and correlates to the weight you see displayed on the scale indicator. It can also be a safety concern as well, since truck weights must be in compliance with federal safety regulations.

truck scale calibration

You might think that a small issue doesn’t mean too much but the truth is that just small inaccuracies on a truck scale that is used regularly can accumulate to large costs for your company over time.

See the example below.

WEIGHMENTS PER DAY: 100
SCALE ERROR: 10 LB
PRICE PER POUND OF YOUR PRODUCT: $0.50
DAILY LOSS: $500
YEARLY LOSS: $150,000

As you can see from the example above, small errors can add up very quickly.

So, you might be thinking, but my scale was calibrated when it was installed, I should be good, right?

Well, the initial installation, does not guarantee continued accuracy. When a truck scale is first installed, it is tested by the scale company and the state weights and measures, both using certified test weights. This is done to ensure the scale’s accuracy as well protect the scale buyer, seller, and the scale installation company. At this point, the scale is certified and ready for everyday use.

However, the scale will need to be checked and adjusted at least a couple of times a year at a minimum. As you can see from the example above, just a few pounds of errors can cost your company a lot of money.

It’s important to remember, scale calibration does not lock in forever. It is dependent on several factors such as frequency of use, weather, gravity, electrical currents etc…. can throw off the accuracy of a measurement device.

The main point of this article is this. A truck scale should be periodically tested and adjusted if necessary. A commercial scale company, like Central Carolina Scale can check your truck scale on a regular basis or if you currently have a scale that has been “tagged out” by the state of North Carolina, CCS can check, test, and adjust your scale and get it back to weighing accurately. Warehouse & Distribution Scales Can Help You Grow Your Business

Warehouses and distribution centers rely on efficient and reliable data to ensure peak performance. Digital Scales and weighing systems can help ensure billing is accurate by monitoring cargo weights, tracking data and ensuring vehicles are filled to the optimum safe capacity. With the assistance of Avery Weigh-Tronix we have compiled a list of various types of scales and how they can benefit your business.

Our Avery Weigh-Tronix products simplify compliance with health and safety regulations, while maintaining efficiency throughout your organization to control costs and safeguard profitability. Regardless of the application, correct weighing practices—including selecting the appropriate scale system—can increase revenue exponentially. Integrating weighing into warehouse operations improves shipping and billing accuracy and enhances overall work flow productivity. Take a look below at just a few of the weighing solutions available that can help your business.

Legal-for-trade weighing
A scale system capable of legal-for-trade weighing can prove to be an invaluable asset in the logistics industry, as revenue is commonly based upon the weight of commodities purchased by or shipped for customers. Legal-for-trade accuracy is required for business transactions where goods are bought or sold by weight. Avery Weigh-Tronix provides a wide range of legal and non-legal scales, but the benefits of a legal-for-trade system extend beyond legality into a scale system that provides reliable, repeatable weighing of goods ensuring customer satisfaction, precise billing and accurate inventory records.

Vehicle Scales
Properly managing inventory and billing in warehouse and distribution center environments depends upon documenting and weighing both inbound and outbound freight. With the high cost of fuel, bulk carriers have to balance the need for optimal loading with concerns about safety. Truck scales and axle weighing systems from Avery Weigh-Tronix will help ensure that trucks are loaded to the ideal weight and conform to stringent legal maximum-weight regulations. Accurate weighing helps companies avoid costly fines as well as premature vehicle wear due to excessive loading.

Unattended Terminals
For increased efficiency, truck scale controls may be integrated into a standalone console that facilitates unattended weighing operations. The terminals enable drivers to complete weighing transactions 24/7, without leaving their cab. The result is that your truck scale can run smoothly without a dedicated operator. This results in reduced operating costs, extended hours of availability and improved health and safety by allowing the driver to stay within their vehicle.

Forklift Scales
A forklift scale allows drivers to lift and weigh bundled materials on the truck. This expedites operations by enabling forklift drivers to take commodities directly to storage upon delivery, while tracking the weight, origin and storage location during transport. This process results in real-time data acquisition, which can be used for billing and inventory management.  The ability to transport and weigh materials in one simple step results in tremendous time savings and a speedy return on investment. Forklift scales are also a compact weighing solution, making them suitable for the busy warehousing environment. In-cab instruments such as bar code scanners allow forklift operators to instantly capture all necessary freight data available, then transmit this information with weight data wirelessly via Bluetooth® or radio to supervisory computer systems. Truck Scale Spring Maintenance Is Important!

Summer will be here before you know it and if you haven’t had your truck scale tested and inspected lately now is the time. The changing of the seasons brings us warm weather, but it also brings running water to truck scale pits and foundations. If left unmaintained, the mud and debris can wreak havoc on truck scale operations and accuracy. We recommend completing the following steps to ensure your scale is up and running in time for the busy summer season. You, the scale owner, can actually do quite a few of the steps below.

Take a walk around the perimeter of your scale. Examine the entire deck, scale pit, foundation and approaches for any major structural or surface problems. If you see any foundation deterioration be sure to fix it right away. Any deck and approach repair is not merely cosmetic; those issues can have a negative effect on the scales performance. Flaking rust and crumbling concrete falling into the pit will add maintenance costs now, but in the future they will reduce the scales’ usefulness.

We’ve been servicing truck scales for a long time and the most common cause of incorrect weighments is debris under the scale (or in the pit) binding movement. Clean all dirt from each component. Remember, even though most scales these days are electronic, they still have moving parts underneath. Load cells still need to be able to deflect through their capacity range.

To cut down on any future debris problems, it’s a good idea to invest in flexible T-Grip or T-Strip rubber molding. These moldings, while being flexible enough to work with the movement of the scale, will keep debris from causing problems and eventual damage to the scale. Depending on the scale design, the molding might only be necessary to cover the end gaps where the trucks enter and exit the scale. Scales weighing open trucks or messy operations will also need side molding to protect against spillage falling into the pit. Continue reading

Announcement On Rice Lake OTR Above Ground Truck Scale

Rice Lake Weighing Systems was recently granted an amendment to its NTEP Certificate of Conformance for the SURVIVOR OTR Series of above ground truck scales. The amendment reduces the scale’s minimum division value (emin) from the industry standard 20 pounds to 10 pounds, making the SURVIVOR OTR suitable for not only vehicle weighing, but high-dollar applications such as livestock and scrap-metal weighing.
The improved resolution is essential where valuable commodities are being weighed and Rice Lake’s truck scales now offer a competitive advantage in those cases.

The new certification applies to Rice Lake’s entire OTR Series, including steel and concrete decks and pit or pitless grain dump models, in standard widths up to 16.5 feet and standard lengths up to 160 feet. The SURVIVOR OTR is also now available with racks and gates for livestock containment needs.
