Q. So how does your product work?

A. Upon entering the O.R. corridor either through the front entrance or through locker rooms, each clinician would step onto the Healthysole® Plus device. The HealthySole® Plus informs the clinician that their shoes are properly aligned and starts an 8-second count down opening up the shutters and exposing the soles or booties to the germ killing ultraviolet light. At the end of eight seconds a green check mark appears letting you know the process has been completed.

Q. Are there any studies that show the quantitative reduction of HAIs in a certain hospital once HealthySole® Plus was introduced?

A. In today’s battle of fighting HAIs, hospitals are using an arsenal of UVC products and equipment such as robots or air and water treatment systems to kill pathogens from those reservoirs. This lack of options is leaving the shoe soles untouched. To answer your question, three independent third-party laboratories including the Cleveland VA, Texas Medical Center Houston and Microchem Labs have tested and proven an over 99% kill rate for MRSA, VRE, CRE, Streptococcus and Pseudomonas.

Q. What will HealthySole® Plus do differently compared to other disinfectants or types of new technology such as whole room plasma machines, UVC robots or chemical environmental decontamination?

A. HealthySole® Plus is an active 24/7 chemical free, UV disinfection technology that when stood on will consistently lower the over microbial load throughout a healthcare environment and even more specifically in the targeted environment. The best
practice for infection control programs is to bundle all the necessary effective technologies to address every potential vector for the spread of infectious pathogens. There is no silver bullet; however, when technologies and chemicals are bundled properly the highest potential for environmental de-contamination is achieved.

Although technology such as ion disinfection systems are an attempt at 24/7 disinfection technology, they only theoretically lower the load in the particular room they are used in and don’t treat the shoe soles nor stop the spread of organisms from entering or exiting an environment. There are areas within healthcare that cannot use this type of ionization or other aerosol or mist technologies. HealthySole® Plus can be used in any environment in healthcare even in conjunction with technology such as these.

UVC robots are a good use of UVC technology to reduce microbial load on visible surfaces. Any shadowed or obscured area is not treated. As well, they do not address the spread of organisms entering and exiting environments via shoe soles. The first person to walk into a robot-decontaminated room will re-introduce all the infectious organisms via shoe soles to that room. Also, UVC robots treat rooms on a case-by-case basis, which requires added healthcare personnel to manage the unit each time it is placed in a room. People cannot be present while this technology is in use, which is contrary to the use of
the HealthySole® Plus. HealthySole® Plus can be placed at any room or hallway where people are present 24/7 and work in tandem in rooms where robots are deployed.

Chemicals are also good for environmental cleaning purposes; however, they are not used all day long, nor can they keep the floors clean when shoes step on a previously de-contaminated floor. Although chemicals are very necessary, they are a quick fix of a contaminated or soiled location, which will be rapidly re-contaminated. Chemicals often cannot be deployed often enough, fast enough, or in certain environments. Because HealthySole® Plus is a non-chemical use of disinfection technology, it can be used constantly by staff and placed anywhere in a healthcare environment and again work side-by-side existing chemical protocols.

Q. Do we already have established protocols for Hospital Departments?

A. Protocols for HealthySole® Plus in different departments will vary depending on each hospital. The layout, size and traffic flow of the particular department or room will vary from hospital to hospital. For example, if implementing HealthySole® Plus into an ICU, HealthySole® Plus should be placed at each entry/exit point within each separate room. For the highest effectiveness in reducing the overall microbial burden and to reduce the spread of pathogens into and out of the ICU, it should be protocol for all staff and visitors entering and exiting the ICU to stand on HealthySole® Plus (assuming there is not an emergency where a staff member needs to relocate immediately).

If traffic flow is high or if the ICU is divided into separate rooms, HealthySole® Plus units should be added to fulfill the need of separate locations or high traffic volume. This same protocol should be followed in other departments, units or wards such as Dialysis, Wound Care, Cancer Treatment, Burn Treatment, etc.

Operating Rooms and OR corridors also need to have HealthySole® Plus units at each entrance/exit of the critical areas beyond the barrier or “red line.” Hospitals that desire to be most effective in lowering the overall microbial burden inside of each OR, can place a HealthySole® Plus unit outside of each room, designated for the entry and exit of each person to that specific room.

Q. We already have a procedure in place that addresses shoe soles. It is mandatory that all of our OR staff replace booty covers when re-entering the OR area, so why would we need HealthySole® Plus?

A. Studies regarding shoe covers and dedicated theatre booties are both supportive and un-supportive of the practice. If over shoes do decrease the amount of pathogens brought into your OR compared to street shoes, that is good; however, there will still be pathogens present on those booties upon entry. If HealthySole® Plus is used immediately before entering the barrier to the corridor or active OR, the bacterial count will be significantly lower then if not used. By killing up to 99.9+% of the remaining pathogens on the booties or dedicated theatre shoes, you are lowering the pathogenic load in the OR and
decreasing the risk of infections.

Remember, 33-37% of HAIs are surgical site infections, many of which come from the OR. Lastly, booties don’t kill the organisms on the soles of the shoes when applied, they simply cover them up. HealthySole® Plus kills the organisms not allowing them to survive or replicate and lowers the OR environmental microbial burden. As well, the HealthySole® Plus can be used in conjunction with over shoe booties, continuing to further strengthen the hospitals fight against infectious pathogens.

Q. We have constant traffic with staff in and out of rooms; therefore, it’s not realistic to have them stand on the unit for 8 seconds each time.

A. Whether or not we like it, ICUs and PICUs suffer issues from dangerous pathogens and all possible Infectious Control hygiene measures must be used to address this. Shoe soles have been proven to be an unaddressed reservoir of infectious pathogens in a hospital environment and are the first step that leads to infection transmission if not addressed properly. It is recommended whenever possible* to use HealthySole® Plus by each person entering the ICU/PICU for an 8-second kill cycle, in order to reduce millions of organisms from entering that critical environment. *As long as that person is not time restricted due to emergency.

Strict hand hygiene guidelines can be somewhat time consuming however critically necessary. Hand hygiene protocols include the use of gloves, minimal numbers of cleaning locations and dispensers and often suggest washing procedures that can
take up to 2 minutes to be effective. These protocols are required prior to treating a patient; furthermore, they are used between separate tasks on one patient and always between tasks on other patients.

The HealthySole® Plus and its ability to reduce germs within a space means it should be handled like hand hygiene as a major barrier to stop the spread of infectious pathogens in an ICU/PICU as well as other acute areas. Wastewater Treatment Plant Case Study

Recently Cardinal Scale Manufacturing provided us with a case study involving remote displays and an unattended Satellite 825 weight indicator. Below is a short overview of the information.

Samra Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) recently took on an expansion project in order to more precisely and efficiently scale all sludge dried through the de-watering system. The project included the installation of Jordan’s first unmanned weighing system. Cardinal Scale’s authorized dealer, Traffic Tech, assisted with the project using Cardinal Scale’s USA-made load cells, (2) SB500 remote displays, an unattended Satellite 825 indicator in conjunction with Traffic Tech’s weighbridge, camera system, printer, and RFID for driver identification.

The vehicle weighbridge became operational in September, 2015. Approximately 35 trucks are weighed daily. With the purchase and installation of the new equipment, Samra Plant O&M Co. is excited to report that the Cardinal digital display is accurate and easy to read. Process Manager Mr. Mohammed reports, “The accurate readings of sludge volume enable us to achieve good accuracy in plant mass balance calculations.” This capability is a great asset to Samra and, in turn, the surrounding community.

The indicator is now located in a suitable place for the drivers to easily extract necessary data. “The drivers and operators find the weighbridge user friendly with clear signs of entering and leaving. The smooth weighing process gives us more accurate and controlled data,” reported Production Manager Mr. Morad.

Also significantly improving the overall process, team members are now able to monitor the weighbridge and trucks using cameras and Cardinal’s WinDDE 2.0 Dynamic Data Exchange program. The weight and status of the weight indicators is made readily available to spreadsheets, databases, and industrial control applications by means of Dynamic Data Exchange.

I was reminded a couple of weeks ago just how valuable it can be to have a smart and knowledgeable service technician work on your project. In my case, it was my upstairs air conditioner.

I put in a new AC unit probably 2 or 3 years ago. When I received quotes from different contractors, they were split on what size unit to install. About half said put a 3 ton unit in and about half said to upgrade and put in a 3.5 ton unit. I put in the 3.5 ton since my upstairs is having to heat/cool a lot of square footage. Anyway based on what I’ve seen over the past couple of years, I probably should have gone with the 3 ton. Our 3.5 ton unit seems to short cycle and doesn’t get rid of humidity as well as I would like.

So a couple of weeks ago I contacted a local company to come out and check my upstairs system and see if there was any way that we could make the situation better, possibly with a whole house dehumidifier. The first company that I contacted came out and gave me a price on a whole house dehumidifier which I had requested. But he also pushed his company service agreement as well and how great that would be. He and I agreed the best thing to do would be to have his service technician come out the next day and see if he could slow the HVAC blower down or make an adjustment on the thermostat settings. Over time, truck scale accuracy can change due to a variety of issues, mostly usage and wear and tear. When you’re looking at a truck scale, accuracy is very important to your business because the value of the product you are transporting affects your bottom line and correlates to the weight you see displayed on the scale indicator. It can also be a safety concern as well, since truck weights must be in compliance with federal safety regulations.

You might think that a small issue doesn’t mean too much but the truth is that just small inaccuracies on a truck scale that is used regularly can accumulate to large costs for your company over time.

So, you might be thinking, but my scale was calibrated when it was installed, I should be good, right?

Well, the initial installation, does not guarantee continued accuracy. When a truck scale is first installed, it is tested by the scale company and the state weights and measures, both using certified test weights. This is done to ensure the scale’s accuracy as well protect the scale buyer, seller, and the scale installation company. At this point, the scale is certified and ready for everyday use.

However, the scale will need to be checked and adjusted at least a couple of times a year at a minimum. As you can see from the example above, just a few pounds of errors can cost your company a lot of money.

It’s important to remember, scale calibration does not lock in forever. It is dependent on several factors such as frequency of use, weather, gravity, electrical currents etc…. can throw off the accuracy of a measurement device.

The main point of this article is this. A truck scale should be periodically tested and adjusted if necessary. What is Quartzell™?

The device converts the oscillating frequencies from two crystals into a digital signal which is representative of the load applied. When profiled, the output signal provides an extremely accurate measurement with a higher resolution than normal strain
gauge technology.

What are the advantages of using Quartzell over Analog strain gauge load cells?
Unlike a strain gauge load cell, which produces an analog signal that has to be converted to digital, the Quartzell transducer utilizes the change in frequencies from two double-ended tuning-fork quartz crystal sensors to produce a true digital signal measured in frequency. This eliminates the need to convert an analog signal to digital and this significantly reduces errors, while increasing speed and accuracy of the measured
signal.

The digital signal allows a scale to weigh faster and with greater resolution. The Quartzell uses two quartz crystals, one in compression and the other in tension. This helps reduce
the impact of environmental influences, such as changes in temperature and pressure.

What is meant by Internal Resolution?

New SOLAS Weight Regulations Coming into Effect

We’ve mentioned SOLAS before but here is just a friendly reminder. Beginning July 1, 2016 changes to the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) treaty will require verified weight certificates for all containers before they are loaded onto a ship. If the certificate is not submitted in a timely matter (12-24 hours prior to stowing cargo), the cargo runs the risk of being refused passage. This new regulation will have a significant impact on several groups, including scale dealers located near ports or working in the overseas logistics industry.

What is SOLAS?
The SOLAS treaty was first passed in 1914 in response to the sinking of the RMS Titanic to improve safety procedures at sea. The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) is part of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the maritime arm of the United Nations.

Aren’t weights currently pre-determined and declared for shipping containers?
Pursuant to previous regulations, shippers have already been required to declare container weights on their supplied bill of lading/paperwork. Verification of shipping weights by approved methods of weighing will now be mandatory due to several maritime disasters. These incidents range from falling containers at port or overboard from ships, forklift accidents, on-deck stack collapses (often due to heavier loads stacked on top of lighter loads), and even shipwrecks due to declared weights being as much as 6.7 times the declared weight. The MSC Napoli met it’s end in January of 2007 when 20% of the loaded containers exceeded their declared weight by 3 tonnes; the largest difference being 20 tonnes and the total weight of the 137 containers was 312 tonnes heavier than the cargo manifest.

Who will be affected by this new law?
The SOLAS treaty affects 99% of the merchant ships around the world in terms of gross tonnage. These revisions will affect shippers, freight forwarders, and vessel and terminal operators. All of these businesses will need to establish policies and procedures to ensure the implementation of these new regulations.

Who enforces the new guidelines?
The maritime organization of each country will be generally responsible for enforcement, beginning July 1, 2016. Implementation of the new regulations should begin prior to July 1st to avoid disruptions and fines, as trans-shipments may depart after the deadline. If weight discrepancies are found between the lading paperwork and the actual weight, non-compliant cargo will not be loaded on vessels, subject to the new regulations.

Who is responsible for weight verification?
The bill of lading paperwork will list the shipper. This entity will ultimately be legally responsible for providing the verified gross mass (VGM). If the exporter uses a third-party agent to pack and weigh the goods to be forwarded to the terminal, the forwarder is acting purely on the instructions of the shipper. Therefore, the exporter remains the legal party responsible for verifying the gross mass prior to stowing cargo.

Container weight verification options:
SOLAS guidelines, legally binding on July 1, 2016, for verified gross mass (VGM) reporting specify only two acceptable methods for weighing a cargo transport unit (CTU):

Method 1: Weigh (or have a third party weigh) the packed CTU.
Method 2: Weigh all cargo items and packing and securing materials, and add this to the CTU’s tare weight.

All methods of weighing must pass standards of accuracy, and should be calibrated according to the appropriate state’s standards. The shipping documents specifying the gross mass must be not only declared, but verified through approved methods. A shipping document ensuring the VGM must be signed by a person authorized by the shipper and submitted to the master/representative and the terminal representative sufficiently in advance, between 12-24 hours prior to stowage, to be used in the ship’s stowage plan.

If the shipping document is not provided for the container with a verified gross mass and/or the master or his representative and the terminal representative have not obtained the verified gross mass of the container, it shall not be loaded on the ship.

What considerations are there when determining the best weight verification methodology?

When considering the best answer to shipping according to SOLAS weight verification guidelines and the new CTU Code of Practice, consider the best method that will:
Allow the highest possible level of accuracy
Work within your logistics processes
Not pose risks to workers or civilians within the containers vicinity
Minimize loss of time and productivity
Minimize costs of maintenance and calibration of the systems/equipment
Provide accurate weighments for timely submittal to shipmasters (no less than 12-24 hours prior to stowage)

Cardinal Scale’s Digital Fill Control Improves Efficiency for Cherry Packing

In preparation for the busy summer harvest season, fruit distributors find tremendous value in equipment improvements and workflow efficiency.

Recently, an authorized Cardinal Scale dealer outfitted a cherry packing shed in California with an upgraded packing system. This operation utilizes a conveyor belt system to transport sorted cherries to be packaged using Cardinal Scale static scales and weight indicators.

The initial weigh-in is performed on 14 conveyor lines using Cardinal Scale’s EB-150-LPAN bench scales and 225 Navigator weight indicators. The customer uses Cardinal Scale’s digital fill control software that comes standard on the 225 indicator and an RB4 relay to control the speed of the conveyor belt filling the cherry packages. When an appropriate weight has been reached, the indicator stops the belt and the container is sent down conveyor rollers to the next work station. The operator is not required to press any keys to continue filling the next container.

The filled cherry container then goes down the conveyor line to the checkweigher, comprised of a Cardinal Scale EB-150-LPAN bench scale with 190 Storm wash down indicator. This station utilizes the ColorZONE feature on the 190 indicator to rapidly indicate over, under, or desirable weight. The 190’s ColorZONE feature overcomes any language barrier that might be an obstacle with reading the indicator. The container is brought to the appropriate weight by manually adding cherries and then sent to final packaging.

The Cardinal Scale system has improved the operation by automating the initial packing process with fill control software.
